New Post

Good morning, Pompey!

It feels really great to be back! Writing this every week has quickly become an highlight for me, that I actually missed doing it last week. But it was good to get some break from work, it felt like time slowed down (in the best way), and hopefully it’s the recharge needed to finish the year strong.

It was a shame we couldn’t bring you some of the events for last week, like the concert at Guildhall, or the food festival at Gunwharf, but we hope you still got out and had a bit of fun.

Summer might be slipping away, but as always there’s still plenty happening around the city to keep your weekend looking lively.

In today’s scoop:

  • Ocean Race back in Portsmouth

  • Free bikes and cycle training for kids

  • Snookies making a comeback!

  • The D-Day story awarded a TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Award

Right, let’s get into it!

In this week’s news:

The D-Day story museum was recently awarded a Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Award, putting it in the top 10% of attractions to visit worldwide, thanks to glowing visitor reviews and based on visitor’s reviews and ratings. The D-Day story has always been an important part of Portsmouth’s proud history, if you’ve not been, this is yiur sign to book a visit!

Thanks to the Recirculate project, refurbished bikes have been donated to children in Buckland, Stamshaw, and young people supported by Enable Ability, all restored by prisoners at HMP Ford using donations from QA staff and locals. And from September, the council’s expanding its Bikeability programme with new Learn to Ride sessions for Year 3 & 4 pupils still learning to ride or using stabilisers. Over 600 kids are expected to take part by spring, all pedalling towards more confident, car-free travel.

Last month, Southsea hosted the SailGP in the Solent waters, this time around The Ocean Race is in town! The Ocean Race is a competition between fully crewed IMOCA raceboats. In 'fully crewed mode', there are four sailors + an on-board reporter. At least one of the crew must be female and two nationalities must be represented across the race crew. The teams will be required to generate at least 30% of the energy used on board during each leg from renewable sources (solar, wind or hydro). Also, specialised equipment will be carried on board to provide water sampling data to international scientists. Read more or get tickets here

Snookies, (and its famous cream cake!) will soon return to Southsea! Snookies was a well loved bakery on Osborne road that unfortunately shut down in 2016 and got turned into an Indian restaurant. It is now set for a return under the new name Snookies & Co., with the promise that the same standard of cakes (& other favourites) which made the original popular will be upheld. There’s no date announced yet, but we’ll let you know when, as soon as we do
