New Post

Good morning, Pompey!

It’s another Thursday, somehow we’re already through the middle of July, with summer slowly creeping away. Hopefully, you’ve managed to soak up a bit of sunshine (and survived its unwanted mate, the UK heatwave).

I’ve got a concert in London this weekend that I’m really looking forward to, though according to the Met Office, we’re in for four straight days of rain, so pack that brolly if you’re heading out.

That said, there’s still plenty going on around the city to keep your weekend plans alive.

In today’s scoop:

  • Voters say leave Portsmouth alone!

  • SailGP in Southsea

  • Stomp for Stamps returns between 23 July and 1 September

  • The Baton of Hope is coming to Portsmouth!

Right, let’s get into it!

In this week’s news:

The survey results for the proposed Local Government Reorganistion plans are here and it is a clear directive from Pompey residents to the Government. 82% of the almost 4000 residents that voted said they are against being forced to merge with other councils, and wanted the City Council to remain as it is. While the results of the survey does not impact on the Government’s decision, hopefully this at least give them pause, and cause a reconsideration

SailGP in Southsea! The Solent in Portsmouth is set to be this weekend’s location for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix. This is race 7 of the 12 race 2025 season, and is the first time its coming to Portsmouth, with spectator crowds of up to 20,000 fans expected to be present. The ticketed event area is on Castle Field, just west of Southsea Castle, with road and footpath closures expected. If you’re going to be out and about around there, do plan ahead

Stomp for Stamps is back for summer 2025! It’s a free, fun treasure hunt for families to explore the many green spaces in the City by walking, scooting, wheeling or cycling. It is backed by the Pompey Monsters initiative, runs from 23 July to 1 September, and is open to all primary-aged children and their families. Just grab a free map and pencil pack from any city library, then hunt for hidden plaques and collect rubbings & stickers along 5 routes. Complete three and you (read, your child) get a reusable Pompey Monsters water bottle when school starts, plus there’s a brand-new decoder challenge this year, with the chance to win a telescope.

The Baton of Hope (the UK’s biggest suicide prevention initiative) is coming to Portsmouth for the first time on Friday, 26 September. It will pass through iconic Pompey spots like Mick’s Burger, Fratton Park, the Historic Dockyard, Spinnaker Tower, and Victoria Park. 105 local baton bearers (personally impacted by suicide) will carry it through the city to raise awareness and spark hope. There will be events and activities along the route, starting in Portsdown Hill and ending in Victoria Park.
