Armed Forces Remembrance Weekend

PLUS: Oktoberfest Portsmouth, New Restaurant, Live Music, Comedy Night & This Week in Pompey

Good morning, Pompey. It’s Thursday!

I’ve been to most of the petrol stations in Portsmouth (okay, maybe not most), since I got my license, and it feels like Tesco’s forecourt has always had the cheapest petrol and diesel. How do they do it? How are they able to sell cheaper than anyone else and still stay in business? It’s those pesky clubcard they sell, isn’t it? Anyways.

In today’s scoop:

  • No new asylum housing in Portsmouth

  • Ugly Bird Restaurant Now open

  • Improvement plan for Council housing

  • Colas Survey

  • Albert Road Ranked

  • Live music, comedy & lots to do

Right, let’s get into it!

In the news this week:

The City Council has successfully lobbied for Portsmouth to avoid having additional asylum housing demands placed on it by the Government. Last year, due to rising costs and pressure around temporary accommodation, the Council argued that the city had already been hosting more people than it could sustain. That has worked, the Government is now expected to place new arrivals elsewhere, while Portsmouth will focus on managing and maintaining only the number of properties currently in use. As part of the council’s plans to improve its housing, planned maintenance for the 22 high rises in the city will now be sped up. What was meant to take seven years has been adjusted to five, with Ladywood House expected to be the first to receive improvements starting late 2026. Other updates to this plan will be presented in this report by Portsmouth Homes to the council tomorrow, 7th Novemeber. Read more here

Albert Road has been ranked as the 8th unhealthiest high street in the South East (72nd in the UK). The study analysed over 400 UK high streets, and based the ranking air quality data and on concentration of takeawys, pubs, sweet shops and vape stores versus gyms present. Albert Road ranked this high because it had below average air quality data but especially because of how many pubs and bars were present (17). More here

And per normal service, what will be a Pompey Scoop issue without a survey? Residents are being asked for their views on the condition of the city’s roads and the tidiness of its street. See this as a review of Colas, the company tasked with maintaining roads, managing streetlights, and keeping our pavements clean and tidy. Take survey here. It closes on 30 Novemeber

Ugly Bird, an Asian Charcoal Grill Restaurant opened to the public last Sunday. Owned and operated by Simon Li and his wife Kay, they are located on the ground floor of Catherine House, Stanhope Road. DO give them a visit, and let us know how it went!
